hitched back from Sydney

Friday 5 May 2006

Nina and I took 4 days to hitch from Sydney to Melbourne around the coast.

Stayed in Huskisson (Jervis Bay), Bateman’s Bay, and Eden. The last two days we needed only one lift each day to get to our next destination. Pretty interesting people picked us up: an IT-consultant for Greenpeace Asia-Pacific, a Trucky supplying Woolworth with a giant trailer load of Veggies & Food on our lift to Eden, a Kiwi-turned-Aussie labourer who took part in the construction of Melbourne’s Federation Square, etc pp.

We left the freeway in Richmond (near Melbourne City) exactly when thousands of footy fans left the MCG after Collingwood beat Essendon… what a crazy Wellcome - from the quiet countryside into a sea of people; Anzac Day made it even busier, so the city was buzzling, too.

After I accompanied Nina to her friends’ [Rosy(English)&Eric(Canadian)] place in Collingwood I took the tram back to the city and boarded the Lilydale bound train back to Croydon, where Amanda was awaiting me.

The last week flew past in no time. Amanda and I moved into Potts Point House, where I had stayed during my 3 month stay in 2004. We met up with German Nina, who stayed just across the road. I tried surfing at Bondi Beach, which was my second time after Mike from Melbourne took me to a beach near Ocean Grove along the Victorian Surfcoast in late 2004.

This morning I put Amanda on a bus back to Melbourne, whereas I will now hitch-hike along the coast to Melbourne with Nina over the next few days.

More about my trip later.
